Invitation to Light Up Flagler

Any school group, youth group,  dance group, choir, chorus, or barbershoppers, interested in performing between 5:30-7:30 p.m., Friday Dec. 5 during the free annual Light Up Flagler celebration that has not received an invitation by mail or email, please contact merchantsofflaglerave@gmail.com or call Sandi at 386-428-1084 for more information. It is great chance to be involved in your community

Light Up Flagler Avenue, the festive annual New Smyrna Beach beachside holiday celebration, will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4.
Santa and his sleigh will visit the avenue, courtesy of the Dream-A-Wish Foundation. Look for Santa at the corner of Flagler and Cooper.

The merchants, in full holiday regalia, will be holding a  “Holiday Open House” and will be serving refreshments. They will also be competing for “best window display” and “best building” during the evening, with judging by three local dignitaries.

Everyone is invited to come out for an evening of holiday cheer. There will be lots of live entertainment by local youth groups and area choruses.

Flagler Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic from Peninsula Avenue to Atlantic Avenue from 5-8 p.m.

“All That Jazz” Art Walk & NSB Jazz Festival

“All That Jazz” Art Walk on Flagler Avenue will be held in conjunction with the 9th annual New Smyrna Beach Jazz Festival, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26. Visit Art Walk and take a fascinating stroll along Flagler Avenue while enjoying the wonderful art on display in galleries, under canopies, on porches and in courtyards. The popular event features painting, jewelry, ceramics, glass blowing, sculpture, fabric arts and more; free children’s activity, entertainment and a special prize drawing; presented by the Gallery Group of Flagler Avenue.

DJ Dennis will be playing jazz tunes and making announcements at the gazebo at Flagler Avenue and Pine Street. There will also be a bidding table at the gazebo for some wonderful “surfboard” art. The one-foot by eight-foot wooden “artistic surfboards” by artists Stephanie Hill, Paulette Capwell, Troy Holloway, Terry Webb, Sue Brown and Kathy Mills will be on display and available for bidding.

And if that’s not enough – there will be music emanating from indoor venues up and down the avenue, courtesy of the 9th Annual New Smyrna Beach Jazz Festival. It’s all free and in walking distance along the five fabulous blocks between the Indian River and the ocean on New Smyrna’s Flagler Avenue.

Art and music – in a charming setting between the river and the ocean – what more could one ask for?  Come for the art, enjoy the music and stay for the sunset at the September Art Walk on Flagler Avenue.

Sponsoring galleries are Galleria di Vetro, Jewelry of Joy, Palms Up Pottery, and Ta Da Gallery. The group is seeking professional artists in any medium to display work at the monthly Art Walks. Artists who can demonstrate their artistic technique are especially encouraged to apply. Themes for Art Walk for the rest of the year will be “Fantasy Works Spooktacular,” Oct. 24; “Christmas Village,” Nov. 28; and ”Special Christmas Celebration,” Dec. 19 (a week earlier, due to the holiday).

Winners of the Gallery Group art competition for August are:

First place award of $100 went to John Mojjis of Boynton Beach for an acrylic painting called “Island Paradise.”

Second place award of $75 went to Robert and Kathleen Brown from Apopka for an acrylic Florida sign, titled “Just Another Day in Paradise.”

Third place award of $50 went to William Fenton from Orlando for a photograph of a sunset near a dock, titled “Peaceful Images Sunset.”

‘Squabbles’ opens at Little Theatre Sept. 11

The season opener at the Little Theatre of New Smyrna Beach, “Squabbles,” a comedy by Marshall Karp will run two week-ends, Sept. 11, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19 and 20 for a total of seven performances.

Squabbles” tells an entertaining story about Jerry Sloan, a successful writer of advertising jingles, who is married to Alice, an equally successful lawyer. Will Bordelon and Jennifer Hyde play the happy couple.

Living with the Sloans is the not-so-happy Abe Dreyfus, Alice’s curmudgeon father, played by Don Campbell.

The situation is exacerbated when Jerry’s mother, Mildred, played by Harriet Winokur, loses her house in a fire and needs a place to stay. Abe and Mildred can’t stand each other.

The play, directed by Shelly Wawrzonek, is one hilarious confrontation after another until the heartwarming finale. The cast also includes Paul Lavallee, Patti Earl and Bobby Roam.

Reserved seating is available for purchase at the box office by calling 386-423-1246 or by visiting in person. Tickets are $14 for adults, $13 for seniors and $7 for students under 18. The box office, 726 Third Ave., New Smyrna Beach is open week-days 1-4 p.m.
