Art Walk on Flagler – Recycled Art April 25

April has arrived – and with it, Earth Month, and a busy schedule of environmental activities. April 18 is World Heritage Day, an international event promoting the conservation of cultural sites and monuments. Earth Day, April 22 is a great day to remember the four R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Restore). Friday, April 24 is Arbor Day, and Saturday, April 25 the “Recycled Art Walk” will be held on Flagler Avenue in New Smyrna Beach. “Recycled” art from Steve Hardock’s students at Coronado Beach Elementary School will be featured in one tent on the avenue. The public is invited to view these works by future artists.
The Atlantic Center for the Arts Volunteer League will man a table and children will be shown how to make art with recycled materials. ACA will also offer information about their community programming.
The Citizens Resource Group on Recycling will be on hand to present information about recycling in our community and what you can specifically do to help our environment – “Think Globally, Act Locally.”
Plan to visit historic Flagler Avenue from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday the 25th and take a fascinating stroll along the avenue while enjoying the wide variety of art works featured inside galleries, as well as works by dozens of visiting artists set up under canopies along the avenue.
Art Walk features painting, jewelry, ceramics, glass blowing, sculpture, fabric arts and more – entertainment, artists’ demonstrations, and a special prize drawing presented by the Gallery Group of Flagler Avenue.
Be sure and get your Art Walk program wherever you see the blue and black flags with the white “gg” logo and get it punched at each of the four sponsoring galleries for a chance to win the prize drawing.
Jewelry of Joy, 307 Flagler Ave., will donate this month’s prize. The other sponsoring galleries are Palms Up Pottery, 413 Flagler; Galleria di Vetro, 310 Flagler; and Ta Da Gallery, 113 Flagler.
Rounding out the Art Walk attractions and fun are the many quaint shops, as well as a variety of dining options, for every taste and budget. Art Walk, a free event, is held the fourth Saturday of each month along the five-block area from the Indian River to the ocean (April 25, May 23, June 27, July 25, Aug. 22, Sept. 26, Oct. 24, Nov. 28 and Dec. 19 (a week earlier due to Christmas).
Art Walk is a wonderful way to spend a Saturday in charming New Smyrna Beach. Come for the art and stay for a beautiful beachside sunset.
The Gallery Group of Flagler Avenue is seeking professional artists in any medium to display their art at Art Walk. Each month the Gallery Group judges the work of visiting artists on the street. A 1st place prize of $100, 2nd place prize of $75, and 3rd place prize of $50, along with corresponding ribbons are awarded at the end of the day.
The first place award of $100 for March went to Ray Brilli for his acrylic painting, “The Old Purple Dory”. He is from Palm Coast and his work can be seen at http://www.raybrilli.com.
New Smyrna Beach resident Denise Morrissette earned the second place award of $75 for her oil on canvas, “Humpback Paradise.” Her work can be viewed at http://deniseart.info/Index_files/page0002.htm
Third place and $50 went to Damien Share from Indiatlantic Beach for an acrylic painting titled “Surf Whimsy.” His work can be seen at http://www.beachtowne.com/damienindex.htm
Art Walk themes for the rest of the year are: May, “Paint Out”; June, “Waterworks”; July, “Christmas in July”; August, “Surfs Up”; September, “All That Jazz”; October, “Fantasy Works Halloween Spooktacular”; November, “Christmas Village”; and December, “Special Christmas Celebration.”
