Plein Air Art Walk on Flagler Avenue

The June 28th Art Walk on Flagler Avenue in New Smyrna Beach is going to be a very special occasion. In addition to all the wonderful art on display in galleries, visitors will get to see plein air artists in action.

From 10 a.m.-5 p.m., several Central Florida plein air painters will be working under canopies, on porches and in courtyards on the avenue. Plein air translates as “open air” and describes paintings that have been created outdoors, rather than in a studio.

Some of the artists painting will include: Diane DeShong Cannon, Christophe Cardot, Stephanie Hill, Jamie Furqueron, Kim Kaiser, Barb Moninari, John Rook, Yvonne Siewell, William Stilson, Ginny Ungwitter and Terry Webb.

And that’s not all there will be to enjoy! DJ Dennis will be set up at the gazebo at Flagler and Pine, playing a variety of tunes, Vicki Lilyfors will be doing face and body painting in front of the Cloisters, a free children’s activity will be offered at Artwood Forest and several galleries will feature refreshments from 3-5 p.m.

Presented by the Gallery Group of Flagler Avenue, Art Walk visitors are invited to go on an art quest by visiting the six sponsoring galleries for a chance to win this month’s free punch drawing prize, sterling silver earrings, donated by Beachsyde Jewelers, 415 Flagler Ave. Other sponsoring galleries are: Anthony Bell Creations, 316 Flagler Ave. Jewelry of Joy, 307 Flagler, Galleria di Vetro, 310 Flagler; Ta Da Gallery, 113 Flagler and Palms Up Pottery, 413 Flagler.

It’s all free and in walking distance along the Flagler Avenue, the five fabulous blocks between the river and the ocean in New Smyrna Beach.

Come see artists work in a charming setting between the river and the ocean Saturday, June 28.

The Gallery Group is now judging works by the visiting artists on “originality, skill, workmanship and uniqueness.” Prizes include ribbons and cash awards: first place, $100; second place, $75; and third place, $50.

Congratulations to Marilyn White won first place winner in May for an acrylic painting.

I know I have been quiet for a while

I know that I haven’t posted anything in quite a while …. but life has a way of sidetracking you. I spent almost 3 months painting the exterior of my house (with a little help from a couple of friends ….thank you Paul and Terry!) I was exhausted physically, mentally and emotionally by the time we finished as much as we could. Who knew it would be that much backbreaking work and take that long? I have several photos that I have wanted to post, including some Photoshop manipulations I have been experimenting with, some nature pictures, people pictures, the SEV Camera Club winners from February-May, but something always came up. You know how that goes……

I was going to post Monday after getting my yard work done in the morning. But, when I came inside and found out that The Observer, where I worked from 1990-2007, was closing its doors – it kinda took the wind right out of my sails. June 2, 2007 – a sad day for SE Volusia – to lose its hometown paper of 95 years.
I am still trying to come to terms with the thought that it is not going to be a part of the community any longer.
Covering events in this amazingl community for almost 17 years was the best job I ever had.
My best wishes go out to the 13 employees who were working at The Observer when it shut down Monday and who are now unemployed. May you all find jobs soon, and good luck with whatever you choose to do.
As Anna Stilloe said to me yesterday….”when one door closes, another door opens up.”
May that be true for all of The Observer employees.
